Alum Chine

Alum Chine

A Relaxed Seaside Favourite With A Hidden-gem Feel…

Tucked just a mile or so west of Bournemouth Pier, Alum Chine is one of those places that locals quietly love – and once you’ve visited, it’s easy to see why. A little more peaceful than the busier central beaches, it offers the perfect blend of golden sands, leafy walks and family-friendly fun.

At its heart is the beautiful chine itself – a steep, wooded valley that winds gently down through tropical-style gardens to the sea. These natural ravines are unique to this stretch of coastline, and Alum Chine is actually the largest in Bournemouth, making it a lovely spot for a shaded stroll before you reach the beach.

The Beach

Alum Chine beach is wide, clean and sandy, with safe, gently sloping waters – ideal for families, paddling and relaxed beach days. It’s also proudly a Blue Flag beach, meaning excellent water quality and facilities. You’ll find everything you need for a full day by the sea, including beach huts, sunbeds, cafés and ice cream kiosks. In the warmer months, RNLI lifeguards are on duty, giving you extra peace of mind. One of the nicest touches here is how easy it is to wander along the promenade – whether you fancy a scenic walk towards Sandbanks or a leisurely stroll back towards Bournemouth Pier.

Gardens, Play Areas & Things To Do

Alum Chine isn’t just about the beach – the gardens above it are a real highlight, especially for families.

There’s even a charming suspension bridge across the chine and a lovely mix of wildlife if you keep an eye out – from birds to butterflies among the trees. History lovers might also spot the memorial to Violette Szabo, a WWII secret agent, tucked away in the gardens – a small but fascinating piece of local heritage.

 Getting Around & Nearby

One of the joys of staying near Alum Chine is how easy it is to explore the coastline.

  • Hop on the land train to the promenade for a fun trip to Bournemouth or beyond
  • Walk or cycle along miles of seafront paths
  • Head west towards Branksome Dene and Sandbanks for quieter stretches of beach

It’s a great base if you want a slightly calmer atmosphere, while still being within easy reach of all the buzz of Bournemouth town centre.

Whether you’re planning lazy beach days, family adventures or peaceful coastal walks, Alum Chine offers a little bit of everything – all with a more relaxed, tucked-away feel that keeps guests coming back year after year – search for your space now!
