Christchurch
Historic Charm, Harbour Life & Coastal Days Out

Christchurch is one of those places that quietly has it all. A historic town set between two rivers and the sea, it blends centuries of history, beautiful coastline and easy access to nature – making it a fantastic base for a self-catering stay. With its relaxed pace, independent shops and plenty to explore, it’s perfect if you want somewhere with character, but still close to the buzz of Bournemouth and Poole

History, Heritage & Must-see Landmarks

At the heart of the town is the impressive Christchurch Priory, dating back to 1094 and the longest parish church in the UK – it dominates the skyline and is well worth stepping inside.  Nearby, you’ll find Christchurch Castle and Norman House, with parts dating back to the 12th century, offering a glimpse into the town’s medieval past. Just a short drive away, Highcliffe Castle sits dramatically on the clifftop – a striking Gothic Revival building surrounded by gardens and coastal walks.

Harbour, Beaches & Coastal Walks

Christchurch is all about being outdoors. The town sits where the Rivers Avon and Stour meet the sea, creating the beautiful Christchurch Harbour, perfect for watersports, boat hire and scenic walks. Head down to Mudeford Quay for a classic day by the water – crabbing, watching boats come and go, or catching the ferry across to Mudeford Sandspit. From there, you can explore Hengistbury Head,  a protected nature reserve with miles of walking trails, coastal views and some of the best scenery in the area.

With several beaches nearby – including Avon Beach and the Sandspit – there’s no shortage of spots to relax by the sea.

Gateway To The New Forest & Beyond

Christchurch is perfectly placed for exploring further afield. To the north, you’ve got the New Forest National Park, ideal for walking, cycling and spotting wildlife, while to the west, you’re just minutes from Bournemouth’s beaches and attractions. It’s this location that makes Christchurch such a great base – peaceful and scenic, but never far from more to see and do.

Entertainment, Shops & Things To Do

Back in the town centre, there’s plenty to keep you busy.

The Regent Centre is a real local gem, hosting films, live music, comedy and theatre throughout the year. You’ll also find a great mix of independent shops, boutiques and galleries, giving the high street a more personal feel than larger towns. Add in riverside walks, boat hire and seasonal events, and there’s always something going on.
